Abstract

Introduction: This study aims to examine the relationship between occupational exposure to gasoline components and the presence of nuclear abnormalities in oral mucosal cells, with a focus on genotoxic and cytotoxic effects. Material and methods: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of 18 workers was used. To collect the samples, the participants' oral mucosa was scraped, fixed, and stained with acridine orange (a specific stain for nucleic acids) for analysis and counting using fluorescence microscopy. The participants gave their informed consent. Results: Nuclear abnormalities were identified in the oral mucosal cells of the workers, the most frequent being karyolysis and binucleated cells; in addition, inadequate use of personal protective equipment was noted. Conclusions: A high frequency of nuclear abnormalities was observed, and there was a lack of guidance for workers on the importance of consistent, proper use of protective equipment.
