Genotoxicity and cytotoxicity in oral mucosa of gas station workers: a systematic review / La genotoxicidad y citotoxicidad en mucosa bucal de trabajadores de gasolineras: una revisión sistemática.

Resumen

Introduction: A relationship has recently been found between occupational exposure to gasoline components and the presence of nuclear abnormalities in oral mucosal cells, which can be classified as genotoxic and cytotoxic effects.

Material and methods: a literature review was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar databases of articles published in English between 2018 and 2023 in which cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in oral mucosa of gas station workers are addressed.

Results: eight articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria, which were quantitative, cross-sectional, and variable association studies, seven of them employed a control group and in seven of them an increase of genotoxic or cytotoxic effects was found in the exposed population.

Conclusions: working in gas stations is considered a risk for developing genotoxic and cytotoxic cellular alterations.
