Resumen

Ethylene oxide is the most commonly used chemical for sterilization of medical devices. It is a mutagenic agent and a possible carcinogenic and teratogenic agent. Ethylene oxide concentration in a sterile product warehouse was measured to determine health effects in exposed workers and propose actions to reduce the risk of developing an occupational disease. Passive monitoring (personal and area monitoring) was performed. Resulting data did not receive statistical treatment. From a total of 23 samples, area and personal samples, 15 were found above the limit exposure value of 1 ppm (parts per million). If no exposure controls are implemented exposed personnel could develop an occupational disease.
