Validation of the RESP-UNAM Questionnaire for the surveillance of respiratory health in work places / Validación del Cuestionario RESP-UNAM para la vigilancia de la salud respiratoria en sitios de trabajo
Abstract
Introduction: The objective of this study is to validate a questionnaire of respiratory symptoms to early identification of cases of respiratory disease at workplaces.
Method: An instrument was prepared with 24 questions of respiratory symptoms: wheezing, cough, dyspnea, expectorations, asthma and allergies. Factor analysis with a VARIMAX rotation and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett sphericity tests were used. Reliability analysis was performed with Chrombach's Alpha. For the concurrent validation of the questionnaire, presence of serious symptoms were asociated with the result of spirometry using the Chi2 test.
Results: Factor analysis identified seven factors that contain 17 of the initial 21 items. The reliability analysis of the questionnaire and each dimension indicates good repeatability: the test has an alpha of 0.82. Serious symptoms of cough and expectoration were significantly associated with abnormal FEF values 25-75 in men
Conclusions: The RESP-UNAM questionnaire is an accessible instrument to monitoring the health of personnel exposed to toxic materials associated to pulmonary work diseases and to the early identifation of cases of occupational lung disease.
